Fraud Facts: FTC Video, Insurance Infographic Help Identity Theft Victims

Are  you a social worker, attorney, or someone who likes helping others work to help resolve the issues identity theft causes?

If so, check out a new video from the Federal Trade Commission. The video is designed to help facilitators who assist consumers in repairing their identity.  Entitled Helping Victims of Identity Theft, it’s the latest addition to the FTC’s library of resources that explain not only how to recognize identity theft, but also how to report it and repair the damage it can cause.

The FTC says it gets more complaints about identity theft each year than any other consumer issue, and estimates that nine million consumers become identity theft victims each year.

Today.com: Identity Theft Not As Funny As in the Movies

Last week we reviewed the new Identity Thief movie and shared a trailer of the hilarious hijinks between Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman. Not surprisingly, the subject of identity theft is getting a lot of mainstream coverage these days. In fact, the Today show’s website recently ran an article suggesting that identity theft is not as funny as in the movies.

Bureau of Justice Says Identity Theft Rose 33% From 2005-2010

An estimated 8.6 million households had at least one person age 12 or older who experienced identity theft victimization in 2010, according to the U.S. Bureau of Justice statistics.

This was an increase from the 6.4 million households victimized in 2005.

Financial Aid Fraud In Online Distance Learning
